What to Have Ready Before Your Countertop Template Appointment

The countertop template is your last chance to get the measurements right before we cut your stone. Once it is cut, there is no stretching it. At Ancient Art Stone, our team comes to your home in Delaware, Maryland, or Pennsylvania, measures everything, and makes the pattern your natural stone countertops are cut from. Granite, marble, quartzite, quartz the template is what makes it fit.

A little prep on your end makes the day go smoothly.

1. Cabinets installed, level, and secure

We template off your actual cabinets, so they need to be fully in place before we show up, including the island, end panels, and fillers. They also need to be fastened to the wall and to each other. If they are still on order, half installed, or shifting, the measurements won't be accurate and we will likely need to reschedule. It is one of the most common reasons a template gets pushed back.

Not sure everything is set? Ask your cabinet installer to check. It takes a few minutes and saves a lot of back and forth.

2. Sink, faucet, and appliance choices made

Each of these changes what we cut in the stone, so pick them before template day and keep the spec sheets handy.

The sink decides the cutout. For example, if you are going with an undermount, we need the actual sink or the manufacturer's template, because sizes and corner shapes differ even when they look the same online.

The faucet tells us how many holes to cut. Some need one, some need three or more, and soap dispensers or air gaps add more.

For a cooktop or slide in range, we need the exact model, since a small difference in width or depth can change how the stone fits. If the appliance is not on site yet, the installation guide with the cutout dimensions works.

3. Stone material and edge profile selected

By template day, your stone should be picked out, whether that is quartz, granite, marble, quartzite, or another natural stone. No slab yet? That comes first, since the slab and the layout go hand in hand.

It also helps to know which edge profile you want, but the edge you like has to work for your project. Some edges need more thickness, some do not suit certain stones, and some are harder around corners or seams. Talk to us ahead of time so we can confirm it is possible, and we will suggest something close if it is not.

Not sure which edge you like? We are happy to show you samples, and our post on countertop edge profiles walks through the options.

4. A decision on existing tile

If you have a tile backsplash or tile on the walls, decide whether you are keeping it or taking it out. Tile that stays changes how we measure, because the stone has to fit right up against it, and the tile thickness and the condition of the wall can change the final dimensions. If it is coming out, the wall may need repair or a finish first. Either way, talk to us before template day, not on it.

5. Backsplash and overhang plans

Want a stone backsplash? Tell us before we template so we can measure for it at the same time. The same goes for seating. If your island has bar seating, we need to talk about how far the stone will overhang and whether it needs extra support underneath, since an overhang that goes too far without support can be a problem.

6. A plan for old countertops and plumbing

In most projects, your existing countertops can stay in place for the template and remain until installation day. If your project requires them to be removed earlier, we will let you know ahead of time. For installation, the sink must be disconnected before our team arrives. Cooktops must also be disconnected from any gas or electrical connections.

After the countertops are installed, plumbing, gas, and electrical reconnections are the homeowner’s responsibility, so be sure to schedule the appropriate professional if needed.

7. A clear space and someone home

On template day, clear the countertops and the area around them so we can reach the walls, corners, and cabinet edges. Keep a path open and pets out of the way. It is also best if the decision maker is home, because small questions come up while we measure, like where a seam should go, and they are easier to answer on the spot.
