Countertop Edge Profiles Explained: The Detail That Changes Everything
When people come into our showroom, they spend a lot of time picking the perfect stone, and then, almost as an afterthought, they ask about the edge.
That one detail? It can completely change the feel of your countertop.
The edge profile is the shape cut into the side of your stone. It's not just decorative. It affects how your countertop looks from across the room, how it feels when you brush your hand against it, how easy it is to clean, and whether it fits your kitchen's overall style. Getting it right matters more than most people expect.
Here's a breakdown of the seven edge profiles we offer at Ancient Art Stone and what each one is best for.
Eased Edge
This is our most popular profile, and it's easy to see why. The eased edge is clean and straight with just slightly softened corners. Nothing sharp, nothing fussy. It disappears into the design in the best way, letting the stone be the star. If you have a modern or minimalist kitchen, this is likely your edge.
3/8 Round Edge
A step softer than the eased edge, the 3/8 round has a gentle curve along the top. It gives the countertop a smooth, comfortable feel, great for islands where people are constantly pulling up a stool or leaning against the surface. Clean lines, a little warmth.
1/4 Bevel Edge
The bevel adds a small angled cut along the top, creating a crisp, defined line without going over the top. It's subtle but sharp, and it works well in both contemporary and transitional kitchens. If you want just a little more detail than the eased edge without committing to something ornate, this is a great middle ground.
1/2 Bevel Edge
Same idea as the 1/4 bevel, but the angle is more pronounced. The result is a stronger visual statement with more presence along the edge and no additional curves. This one tends to appeal to homeowners who want something with a bit of character but still want to keep things geometric and modern.
1/2 Bullnose Edge
The half bullnose has a rounded top edge with a flat bottom. It's softer and more relaxed than the bevel profiles, and it pairs really well with traditional and transitional kitchens. It also cleans up easily since there are no tight angles where grime can collect.
Full Bullnose Edge
The full bullnose is completely rounded from top to bottom, a smooth, flowing profile all the way around. This is the go-to for families with young kids because there are no sharp corners anywhere. It also gives a classic, timeless look that works in just about any style of home.
Ogee Edge
The ogee is the most decorative profile we offer. It features an elegant S-shaped curve that adds a traditional, almost architectural quality to the countertop. You'll see it most often in formal kitchens, luxury spaces, or homes with detailed cabinetry where that extra flourish feels right at home. It's not for every kitchen, but when it fits, it really fits.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly, there's no wrong answer. The edge profile is personal, and it depends on your style, your space, and how you live in your kitchen.
A few things to keep in mind:
Simpler profiles like the eased and round edges are more forgiving. They go with almost everything and are easy to keep clean.
More detailed profiles like the ogee or bevel look stunning but work best when they complement the rest of the design. If you have young children or elderly family members, rounded edges are always a smart, safe choice.
The best way to decide? Come see them in person. It's hard to picture how an edge will look and feel until you're standing in front of a real slab with the actual profile cut into it.
